Chapter Seven

The night had been a long one, too long. She had taken a half hour, however, and she and Connor snuck off to the storage room so that he could help her change her panties. Well, she had taken a break and it turned into a lunch so that both of them could find pleasure with each other, even if he never actually fucked her. Damn it. Standing with her back to the door while Slater opened her front door, she watched Holden and Slater both. Her fingers twined with Holden’s and then she laughed at the impatient huff of breath he gave before shoving at Slater. “I swear I think he’s taking longer because he knows how much you want to attack me.”

“Actually, I’m not,” Slater said. “I’m taking longer because I’m eyeing up the obvious signs of tampering to the lock.” He shot her a look before slipping his hand up under his jacket and coming out with a gun. A quick check and he eased her door open fast, sweeping ahead of him with the weapon. With a look that told her to stay put, he disappeared inside silently.

Patty pressed her back hard to the wall and looked up at Holden with fear in her wide blue eyes. She gulped. “Holden?” she whispered and gasped when he pulled a weapon out as well. She was panting, worry clear in every line of her body and the wideness of her eyes.

He pressed in closer to her, slipping an arm around her waist. “Shh,” he breathed out. Pressing a kiss to her temple, he pulled her into his body and held her tight.

Slater reappeared a few minutes later. “All clear,” he told them. “It doesn’t look like anything’s been disturbed, but you need to look around, sweetheart. I can’t say if someone got in here, or not for sure. Take a look around each room, but don’t touch anything. Not yet anyway,” he said.

Patty nodded and entered her home between both men. She hadn’t let go of Holden’s hand, she was shaking too badly. “Why me?” she blurted without even thinking about it. “I don’t understand why this psycho has fixated on me.” She had been trying to think of just who it was that had been steadily moving up their attacks to her, but for the life of her she couldn’t come up with anyone that would be that stupid, that crazy.

“Some people’s crazy isn’t meant to ever be understood,” Holden told her. “There’s usually no rhyme or reason to why someone becomes fixated. You could have smiled at them in a way they deemed to be flirtatious. In their mind they then begin to create a fantasy world, with you at the center. When you don’t participate, or act as they figure you should, they get very pissed off. When they get pissed off, they lash out, and it’s usually at the one they have wrapped their fantasy around.”

“Goodness.” And she worked in a position that didn’t afford her a way to simply not smile at people, not talk to them.
